Kev’s 8 Steps to Quick Recovery From Sickness

I recently caught a really really bad cold with flu like symptoms however I managed to get over the worst of it in a matter of a couple of days. I thought today I would share my personal 8 Steps to a quick recovery from a cold or a flu.
I often feel like I am getting a cold however as a general rule, I don’t seem to get them. In fact I can’t recall the last time that I actually had a full on cold however it was at least over 2 years ago.

Well this changed last week as I somehow caught one of the worst colds I have had in many years. This was a full on sickness with a bad cough, runny nose, temperature, night sweats, the chlls etc. It was one of the worst colds I think that I have caught in my life. To give you an idea of how bad it was, I likely go an entire year without taking any Advil or Tylenol. I was so achy(to the point I couldnt sleep due to the severe body aches) that I took Advil for an entire week. This is so against what I believe however I was so achy I had no choice or I would not have been able to sleep.

Having said that, I seemed to rebound quite quickly and get over the worst part of the cold within a few days. I still had some cold symptoms however the aches and pains, fever, chills etc were gone within a couple of days.
Whenever I feel a cold coming on, feel run down or have a cold(like this time), there are a few magic remedies that I use in order to rebound quickly.
I thought that today I would share my 8 secrets to eliminating sickness and recovering quick!
Load Up on C, D and Tumeric
In addition to my regular daily vitamin regimen, I overload my system with Vitamin C, D and tumeric. Vitamin C and D are great vitamins to take in the winter months and especailly when you are sick or have a cold. Turmeric is great as it reduces inflammation and when you are sick your entire body is inflammed so it is great for you to take some Turmeric.
Lemon Water
For those of you that read my blog, you know that I start each day with a large glass of distilled water with freshly squeezed lemon. This is a great way to help detoxify your system, put your body in an Alkaline state, and also get some additional natural Vitamin C. When I am feeling run down or sick, I also make a batch of Lemon water combined with Vitamin C powder to have during the day to really help build my immune system. For those that missed my blog on my morning routine, you can acceess it here:http://kevinbradyhealth.ca/8-morning-secrets-to-a-great-day/ ‎
Oil Of Oregeno
One of the things I talke whenever I am sick are drops of Oil of Oregeno. Although it does not taste good at all, ,I find a great way to assist in getting over sickness/colds very quickly. I simply put a couple of drops in a a few ounces of water and hold under my tongue for a minute or two then swallow it. It tastes brutal but is effective in helping you to get well.
Manuca Honey
I think it was Barb that gave me this valuable remedy when feeling sick or run down. I typically have Manuca Honey in a hot lemon water tea in the evening and also have a teaspooon of Manuca honey prior to going to bed. I have since realized that Manuca Honey also helps you have a deep sleep during the night. This is because one of the reasons we tend to wake up during the night is a reduced level of glucose in our brain. By feeding your body some natural sugar(honey) prior to bed it ensures that you have ample Glycogen stores during your sleeping hours and therefore tend not to wake up.
Drink Lots Of Liquids
Our moms knew what they were talking about when they had us load up on liquids(mainly water) when you had a cold. This helps to detoxify the system and also flush the germs out of our system. I notice when our dog Wilson is sick, he eats very little as this is his body trying to heal. When we put the body in a fasting state it tends to help us get better quickly and recover from a cold and or flu.
Sleep
Once again, our mothers knew best! When I am sick I make an effort to get to bed really early and get a good nights sleep. Sleep is when our body mends itself and recovers and there is nothing better to boost the immune system than some good sleeps. When I am run down or feeling sick with a cold, I even try to have an afternoon nap when able(weekends) to futher boost the imune system.

 Zero Workouts When Sick
Typically one of the most difficult things for me to stop doing when ill is working out. However with my most recent cold, I had zero energy and did not feel like working out at all(which was likley a good thing!).
I have learned that it is best to hold off any working out until you are rid of any fevers, aches or pains. Finally last Sunday I was feeling a little better so I went out for a nice easy long run(1 hour). It was amazing and I felt so rejuvinated after my run as I think my body was feeling ‘Alive and Well” once again. In addition, all the junk that is in our lungs, sinus and throat tends to come up during a workout following sickness which detoxifes and cleanses the system. It also emotionally put me back in a great place as I knew I was over my cold and was on the mend. It felt amazing to get outside and get the body moving and feel the nice crisp fresh air on my skin and in my lungs.
Infared Sauna
Although I don’t have an Infared Sauna at home, I thought I would share the health benefits I have enjoyed by using an Infared Sauna in the past. Having an Infared Sauna when feeling like you are getting run down, catching a cold or are  sick has tremendous health benefits. The theory is that when you are sick, the reason you get a temperature or a fever is it is your body fighting the virus or infection. By taking an infared sauna, you are in essence putting your body in a “fever like state” and therefore allowing your body to natually fight off any infections or virus. We have an infared sauna at the cottage and it is one of my daily rituals when I am at the cottage. In addtion to puitting you in a Zen like state, it also fights off any infection your body by battling.
So to conclude, I hope that you personally manage to fight off any illness this winter. However if you do feel run down, feel like you are getting sick or get a cold or flu, I encourage you to use the tips I have shared that helped me to get over my recent cold in a matter of a few days.
Wishing you a Healthy and Happy winter season, Kev
